The Greek Patrobas (pa-TRŌ-bus) is not found at all in Roman records, but the Romanized “Patrobius” (pa-TRŌ-bi-us) occurs eight times, four of them in the New Testament period. The Roman ending may indicate a desire not to be associated with slave status, since several men named Patrobius were quite prominent freedmen.14 However, the Greek Patrobas of Romans 16:14 points to a man of lower social status. Hermas (HER-mas) is also likely a slave name, since it is Greek and derived from the god Hermes.
